Bio
Andy Davidson is an accomplished composer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist based in Saint George, Utah. Drawing upon his foundations in jazz and classical music theory, Andy composes for audiences of concert, sacred, academic, and film music.
Through his studies at Bob Jones University (BJU) with award-winning composers, Dr. David Janssen and Dr. Seth Custer, Andy has compiled a diverse portfolio, including works showcasing mastery of traditional styles, such as his Reverie for Brass Sextet; finesse in orchestration technique, as in his Five Variants of “What Wondrous Love Is This?”; and appreciation for unique sounds, displayed in his Post-Tonal Sketches and Kaleidophonics.
In 2023, Andy scored his first major soundtrack in the short film Life Like Grass. That same year he also achieved international recognition as a composer through his commission to write the opening piece for the BJU Symphony Orchestra’s Italy tour, Fanfare Prelude on Lasst uns Erfreuen. He eventually expanded this piece into a full arrangement for choir, congregation, and orchestra, premiered five months later.
A Unique Style
While classically trained, Andy exhibits a unique musical personality, often blending his favorite elements from a variety of stylings. In 2024, Andy found his voice as an artist by developing Generative-Formal Composition, a system of theory that combines aspects of Set Theory, Negative Harmony, and Unconventional Tonality to create a personal harmonic language and maximize flexibility with his musical material.
A skilled jazz and bluegrass improviser, Andy also seeks to make his music conversational and poetic, looking largely to the Modern and Romantic eras for his compositional syntax.
Andy is a trained audio engineer and exhibits a fascination with sound production. He creatively uses his diversity of knowledge and background to acquire desired sounds, textures, and emotions in his writing.
Detroit-born and Utah-bound Andy is known for combining bombastic sounds of the city with rustic sounds of the country, adding rich color and warmth to his music.
